Printing company
Reducing costs and lead times with automated production
The challenge: One of our customers faced challenges with a plastic wedge they sourced from an overseas OEM supplier. The high costs and long lead times were problematic, especially since they required hundreds of these wedges annually.
The strategy & solution: We stepped in to help. After creating and approving a detailed print with the customer, we initially produced the wedges on our CNC machines. Soon, we transitioned the production to our Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), allowing us to run these operations “lights out” overnight and on weekends without the need for an operator.
The results: Our customer now saves over $250,000 annually and can maintain a stock of these wedges at minimal cost.

Quad recycling
Innovative solution for recycling shredder hammers
The challenge: The recycling department at Quad would periodically send us a skid of worn shredder hammers to repair and re-machine the edges. Previously, we would weld and re-machine the edges, a process that required the shredder to be down for a day for removal and another day for re-installation. Removing and installing hammers was not only time-consuming but also posed a risk of injury.
The strategy & solution: Our team collaborated with the recycling department to understand the shredder’s operation and devised a solution: removable tips. These new, hardened tips maintain their sharpness longer and can be replaced by the maintenance team without disassembling the shredder. This process takes only a few hours, significantly reducing downtime and minimizing injury risk.
The results: By implementing these sharper inserts, we improved the shredder’s functionality, reduced the risk of fires and lowered the energy consumption. Now, all shredders at Quad are equipped with these inserts, resulting in substantial savings for the company.

Midwest Engineered Systems
Reducing costs and lead times from a re-design collaboration
The challenge: An engineer from Midwest Engineered Systems (MWES), approached us for design and manufacturing advice on a very large weldment. After some collaborative brainstorming, we identified significant manufacturing challenges with the original design.
The strategy & solution: We suggested re-designing it as a two-piece assembly, which MWES ultimately adopted. The new design, allowed us to machine each piece individually in a more rigid state, resulting in greater consistency and accuracy. Additionally, the two-piece construction proved to be more economical for both MWES and us.
The results: Thanks to this successful collaboration, QuadMetalworks, a Quad division, was awarded the purchase order for both weldments.
